Leaning States, 2012. Latex enamel on plywood.

Leaning States is one part of my senior thesis show. I made seven different states (Hawaii, California, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Michigan, and Massachusetts) out of plywood and paint, and used them as props for a series of short performances (the videos of which will be posted soon). However, I decided that I wanted to display the states themselves in addition to the video, and the result was Leaning States. During the performances, I experienced just how strange it is to hold a familiar two-dimensional image as a three-dimensional object, and I wanted others to be able to see how they change when they become objects. Leaning seemed like an effective way to emphasize their existence in the third dimension.

Yasuaki Onishi completed an artistic commission at Rice Gallery for their creative space. The suspended fabricated mountainscape is formed from two materials; plastic sheeting and black colored hot-glue. Onishi shaped the floating sculpture within the gallery space by first draping the expansive plastic piece over stacked cardboard boxes, then removing the piled components following the white sheet having been attached to the ceiling by the quick-drying adhesive. This creative process or method is known to Yasuaki Onishi as ‘casting the invisible’ and aids in his artistic meditation on the reality of negative space.

much better shot of a piece i reblogged earlier.
I like this piece a lot more now that I can see how it’s suspended and that the bottom and tops of the poles are sharp and pointy.

Star Trek Be Quiet Book by Julie Gillrie

There’s only two easy ways I can think of to quickly shut your kid up the sci-fi way, either jettison them into the vacuum of space or make them this crafty Star Trek Be Quiet book, with felt finger puppets representing the crew, a glove that teaches the intricacies of the Vulcan salute, and a dress-up Picard/Locutus doll. One does not simply buy this Be Quiet book however, it’s only available through PDF instructions over at Julie’s etsy. So you might still want to consider the vacuum of space.
